London (May, 1891) - pp.22-23   Kelly's Directory, 1891 Previous Page Next Page Village Links GREAT APPLEBY is a township large village and parish, and, by 2 and 3 William IV. cap. 64, partly in the county of Leicester, and partly In the Southern division of the county or Derby, 9 miles north from Atherstone, 110 from London, and 5 south-west from Ashby-de-la-Zouch union and county court district, rural deanery of Sparkenhoe first portion, archdeaconry of Leicester and diocese of Peterborough. The church of St. Michael is a building of stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel of five bays, nave, aisles, and a noble embattled western tower with spire rising to a height of about 135 feet, and containing a clock and 6 bells, the tenor dated 1619 the rest being of later date : the east window , erected in 1879, is a memorial to the late George Moore esq. and Isabel Clara, his wife: on the south side are two memorial windows, erected by the Rev. J. M. Echalaz, late rector, to his children, and the other to himself: in the vestry is a marble tomb, with recumbent effigies of a knight in armour and a lady without name or date, but supposed to represent Sir William de-Appleby and his wife : the chancel contains mural monuments to the Rev. A. Mould, a former rector (1683), the Rev. Thomas Mould (1642) and to Elizabeth, wife of Edward Dawson (1765) : there is a similar memorial in the south aisle to the Rev. Thomas Mould, many years master of Appleby Grammar School (1796), and affixed to one of the pillars in the same aisle is a marble tablet to the Rev. James Gresley (1766) : there are 600 sittings, of which 100 are free. The register dates from the year 1572, and is in fair condition. The living is a rectory, gross yearly value £866, with residence, in the gift of George John Moore esq. and held since 1877 by the Rev. Charles Thomas Moore M.A. of Trinity Hall, Cambridge. There are Wesleyan and General and Particular Baptist chapels. An acre of land, the gift of G. J. Moore esq. situated at the west end of the church and adjoining the highway, was consecrated in November, 1877, and is used as an additional burial ground. The principal landowners are George John Moore esq. J.P., D. L. the Governors of Market Bosworth School, who are lords of the manor, and the Rev. John Mould M.A. vicar of Oakham. The soil is partly light and partly heavy ; subsoil, generally clay and marl. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The parish contains 4.748 acres ; rateable value, £5.022. -The population in 1881 was, with the hamlet of Little Appleby, 757 (438 in Derby and 319 in Leicester) Little Appleby is a hamlet in the parish of Great Appleby, situated 1 mile south from the village; Appleby Hall half a mile north-east is the seat of George John Moore esq. Letters arrive from Atherstone at 5.35 a.m. ; dispatched at 8 p.m. Measham nearest telegraph office SCHOOLS:- Grammar (Great Appleby), a large building of red brick, with masters' residences, was founded by Sir John Moore, Lord Mayor of London in 1697, and is believed to be the only school of which Sir Christopher Wren was the architect : it has a yearly endowment of 380, derived from 238 acres of land : the fees for day boys are £6, and for boarders, £50 a year : the Rev. William Simpson Bamber M.A. headmaster : R. R. Frederick B.A. second master, English department National, erected in 1845, for 120 children, average attendance 64 ; Miss Hannah M.
