London (May, 1891) - p.309   Kelly's Directory, 1891 Previous Page Next Page Village Links STRETTON-EN-LE-FIELD is a township and parish on the river Mease, at the south-east extremity of the county, 9 miles north-east from Tamworth, 5 south-west from Ashby-de-la-Zouch and 2 west from Measham station on the Ashby and Nuneaton branch of the Midland and London and North Western joint railways, in the Southern division of the county, hundred of Repton and Gresley, Swadlincote petty sessionaI division, Ashby-de-Ia-Zouch union and county court district, rural deanery of Repton, archdeaconry of Derby and diocese of Southwell. The church of St. Michael is a building of grey sandstone, dating from the 14th century and consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles and octagonal spire, containing a clock and 2 bells, the first inscribed "Cum sono si non vis venire, Nunquam ad preces cupies ire," and the 2nd, "SCELAI," in Lombardic capitals : nave, aisle and chancel are Decorated, but much injured and debased by subsequent repairs : the flat oaken roof of the nave and the east window are Perpendicular: the aisle is .separated from the nave by three pointed arches, on square piers without capitals, placed diamond-wise: the octagonal font dates from c. 1662 : in the north wall of the aisle is a recess inclosing a monumental slab 7 feet in length and bearing a plain Latin cross in slight relief ; it probably .marks the resting place of Osbert de Stretton, who rebuilt the body of the church; in the same aisle is an alabaster slab, with the incised figure of a priest and an inscription to Walter Savage, rector of Stretton, ob. 23 May, 1513 : in the chancel are several modern monuments to previous rectors, and in the aisle to the Browne family: there are 300 sittings. The earliest register book, which has been recently but indifferently bound, begins in 1637, but there are several bIanks : these records include a list of collections by Brief, from 1706 to 1722. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £249, with 51 acres of glebe, net yearly value £240, with residence, in the gift of Sir Mylles Cave-Browne-Cave bart. and held since 1886 by the Rev. Edward Hallett Todd M.A. of Worcester College, Oxford. Stretton Hall, the seat of Sir Mylles Cave-Browne-Cave bart. D.L. who is lord of the manor and the principal landowner, is an ancient mansion near the church and surrounded by a shrubbery. the soil is heavy ; subsoil, chiefly sandstone. About two-thirds of the land is in pasture. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The acreage is 1,7CO acres; rateable value, l 1,335; the population in 1881 of the parish was 330 and of the township 70. Letters through Ashby-de-Ia-Zouch arrive at 8.30 a.m. Appleby is the nearest money order office & Measham is the nearest telegraph office of this parish.
