London (May, 1891) - p.315   Kelly's Directory, 1891 Previous Page Next Page Village Links THORPE is a small parish and village, picturesquely situated on the borders of Staffordshire, in the immediate neighbourhood of the romantic scenery of Dovedale, on the river Dove, 3¾ miles north-by-west from Ashborne (the nearest) station on the Churnet Valley branch of the North Staffordshire railway and 10 south-west from Wirksworth, in the Western division of the county, Wirksworth hundred, Ashborne union, petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Ashborne, archdeaconry of Derby and diocese of Southwell. The church of St. Leonard, a building of stone, consists of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 3 bells, two with inscriptions in Lombardic capitals and a third recast in 1845 : the tower is the oldest part of the existing church and dates from 1150 : the east window is Decorated and on the south side of the chancel is a piscina and two square-headed Perpendicular windows : within, the chief object of interest is an altar tomb of alabaster to John Millward esq. ob. 28 Jan. 1632, with a shield of arms; on one side of the inscription, which is very faintly incised, can be distinguished small figures of his two sons and two daughters : there are also mural monuments to the Rev. Thomas Winder, rector of Thorpe (1766) and to Benjamin Theophilus, son of the Rev. B. G. Blackden, formerly rector of Thorpe ( 842) : the font is Norman, but was partially restored some years ago: in 1881 the chancel was restored and a vestry and organ chamber built, an entirely new roof of pitch pine and choir seats of oak were added and the floor laid with Minton's tiles; a new east window was also erected, the nave was restored, the gallery at the west end removed and the Norman arch opened out ; it was also reroofed and reseated with open pitch pine benches; a new pulpit of Hopton stone and Derbyshire polished marble and a heating apparatus were added ; the total cost being about £90, all of which was collected by the Rev. T. T. Howell M.A. rector ; the silver-gilt communion plate dates from 1709 and was presented by the Dowager Duchess of Beaufort : there are sittings for 120 persons: in the churchyard are two very fine variegated sycamore trees, planted by the Rev. Henry Lee in 1721. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1538, of marriages from 1541 and of burials from 1539 ; these records are in good condition. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £72, net yearly value £113, with glebe and residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Southwell, and held since 1888 by the Rev. Thomas Wilson Windley M.A. of St. John's College, Cambridge. A parish room was erected here in 1887 at a cost of £250 and is partly used as a Sunday school: the elder children attend the school at Ilam. The interest on £20, bequeathed by the Rev. Thomas Winder in 1766, is distributed in doles to the poor on St. Thomas' day. The Isaac Walton hotel, frequented by visitors to Dovedale, is in the parish of Ilam, Staffordshire, but there are two good hotels in the parish, the "Peveril of the Peak" and the "Dovedale," where persons will find every accommodation. Sir William Fitzherbert bart. J .P. of Tissington, is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The trustees of H. S. Thornton esq. and R. W. Hanbury esq. M.P. of lIam, are also landowners. The soil is mixed ; subsoil, clay and limestone. The land is chiefly in pasture for dairy produce. The area is 1,778 acres; rateable value, £1,997 ; the population in 1881 was 182.
