SHIRLAND is a parish, in the same hundred as Alfreton, two miles north by west from that town, situated near the railway before mentioned [the Wingfield, second class, station on the North Midlands Railway]. It contains the hamlet of HIGHAM, a place of great antiquity, and formerly a market town, but discontinued as such about 1785. The parish church of St. Leonard, contains several old monuments of the De Greys. The population of the parish is about 1,200, and that of Higham about half that number.
