SHIRLAND is a parish, in the same hundred as Alfreton, two
miles north by west from that town, situated near the railway before
mentioned [the Wingfield, second class, station on the North Midlands
Railway]. It contains the hamlet of HIGHAM, a place of great antiquity,
and formerly a market town, but discontinued as such about 1785. The
parish church of St. Leonard, contains several old monuments of the
De Greys. The population of the parish is about 1,200, and that of
Higham about half that number.
