A postcard of Matlock from a painting by Henry
Hadfield Cubley, dated 1903. Cubley lived in Matlock Bath for a quite number
of years and painted many local scenes. Smedley's Hydro and
the chimney of its boiler house are unmistakable in this picture.
Perhaps the people he has included are his wife and one of his
daughters, or both his daughters, as he has made them as equally
important as the Hydro in his composition, if not more so, as the
eye is immediately drawn to the red dress. Also see Old
Matlock, which includes three figures. |

The card was posted at
Ryde, IOW, on 15 Mar 1906 and sent to Mrs. Sutton of Ryde by her
sister Emma. The message is unconnected to Matlock.
The postcard had the usual side bar for the card's title and message that was
part of all postcards produced in the first decade of the twentieth century but
has been omitted to present a slightly larger image.
