This lovely card dating from around 1915, shows a view of Dale Road
still easily recognisable today, with the turrets of the Olde Englishe
and what was Hunter's shop along the road in the centre.
Henry Barnwell, whose name is painted above the shop doorway on the
corner opposite the entrance to the station, moved to Matlock from
Warwickshire and founded the family business in 18761.
The shop named after him was still advertising in the trades directories
as selling jewellery, watches and china in 19162,
though the premises became a bank shortly afterwards. After Henry's
death his widow, Hannah (nee Ludlam), who was his second wife, took
over at first but she too died and the business was then run by Harry
William Barnwell, Henry's son3.
The Barnwells were members of the Matlock United Reformed Church.4
Harry William also married twice; his first marriage was in 1890 to
Ann Ludlam and, following her death in 1906, he married Eliza Ludlam
in 1907. Both marriages took place at Matlock Bank's Congregational
Chapel.
