This slightly grainy picture shows a view of the Dale below High
Tor that is little different from that seen today[1]."The
high-road along Matlock Dale, through which the Derwent ripples,
with the towering heights of Masson on the one side, and on the
other the precipitious cliff which form the river frontage
of the High Tor, present a picture of rare charm, though in some
places somewhat disfigured by quarry workings"[2]. |
Photograph by Valentine & Sons, Ltd., Dundee, from Ward Lock & Co's "Matlock,
Dovedale, Bakewell and South Derbyshire", Illustrated Guide
Books of England and Wales (Series, 1926-7).

The photographs in the book were unlikely to have been taken specifically
for the guide and were also not necessarily of the same date the
book was published.
