An early autumn scene, looking down on Matlock Bath from the Heights
of Jacob. The leaves are just beginning to change colour.
The River Derwent flows through the steep sided valley and the relatively
newly built Jubilee Bridge is reflected in the still water. The buildings
of North Parade, with their awnings out ready for the visitors, are
beside the river. The tree clad slopes leading up to the Heights of
Abraham rise up on the left hand hillside and the limestone outcrop
of High Tor is left of centre. Starkholmes straggles across the hillside
on the right and Riber Castle stands guard at the top. Montpellier,
Ashfield, Belle Vue House, Wellington house and the aptly named Round
House are just a few of the individual buildings in the picture. The
houses of Holme Road point up from the station towards the Heights.
Posted in Matlock on 2 Sept 1911 to a Miss Permain in Southampton,
the unknown sender wrote glowingly of pre-war Matlock and Matlock
Bath:
"Grand and Glorious weather here. I am enjoying myself immensely.
Climbed Jacob Heights on Wednesday & several others since. Panorama
exquisite. Should like to stay a month, don't intend to hurry home." |
