Two postcards of the New Bath Hotel's outdoor swimming pool, both
possibly dating from the 1930s.
Above shows the pool and the picturesque turnstile at the swimming
pool entrance. Fed by thermal water, the olympic sized pool was
always very popular with locals during the summer months and it
was here local children learned to swim. The slide
and diving boards at the deep end were very popular but are no
longer on the poolside. The white building behind
the pool and to the right had in earlier times been Walker's or
the Bath Terrace Hotel. When this picture was taken it had become
the annexe to the New Bath, where bathers changed and where some
of the hotel staff were accommodated. The long low building behind
the pool and to the left is part of the mews buildings of Portland
House.
Below is another view of the pool, this time looking towards the
back of the hotel's main building. Perhaps the bunting was for
a special event. Spectators certainly outnumber swimmers! |
